Product Classification

What is classification?

Product classification (or tariff classification) describes the process of assigning goods a full HS code. For more information on what HS codes are and how they work, read our article.

Whether you're importing a live chicken, a gold bullion or a smartphone there is only a single HS code within each country's tariff that represents that exact product or commodity. Depending on how specific the import country tariff is, very precise details can determine the HS code. For example, if you want to import a pair of shoes to the United States you would need to know the following:

  • what type of shoe it is;
  • the composition of the sole;
  • the composition of the upper;
  • the size of the instep;
  • etc.

Classification professionals apply the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI) publicized by the World Customs Organization (WCO) to determine which HS code to assign to a product or commodity. Accurate classification requires the services of professionals with substantial experience and understanding and the cost can often be high.

We have designed a system that allows a layperson with no experience to be able to accurately classify a product within our database. While we cover thousands of products already, we also offer Managed Classification Services and are able to classify products that we do not currently cover.
